the Marathon Distance

2007
140 Min
Documentary
Available on DVD

This film was designed to explore the lack of interest and barriers that black Americans face in distance running, especially the marathon. The main question asked is "Why don’t black (African) Americans run long distance, specifically, the marathon?" The range and depth of response is truly amazing. Many of these interviews are quite candid and the opinions reach all over the board in trying to explain such a complex topic. Answers reveal a host of aspects including cultural influences, socio-economic factors, genetics, mindset, coaching, marketing, role models, prejudice, and physical health issues. These beliefs came from a wide range of writers, race directors, sponsors, running club members, professional and amateur runners, Olympic marathoners, and people of a wide range of nationalities and ethnic groups. With over 60 commentators, some of the most distinguished guests include:

Bill Rodgers Frank Shorter Amby Burfoot Hal Higdon Dick Beardsley
Khalid Khannouchi Craig Masback Meg Keflezighi Moses Tanui Daniel Njenga
John Bingham Guy Morse III Carey Pinkowski Mary Wittenberg Joan Benoit-Sanuelson
Cherono Benson Allan Steinfield Abdi Abdirahman Laban Kipkemboi Brian Sell
Kathyrn Switzer Andrew Suozzo Roger Craig Mark Coogan Dr. Joe Vigil

Some of the organizations reviewed include Students Run LA, Tri-Masters, and Max Fitness. The presence of major events like the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon, the LA Marathon, and the ING New York City Marathon show prominently. Although many facts are presented and theories interjected you may still find yourself pondering questions at the conclusion of this film. It is clear that African Americans are welcomed to distance running and that many people are trying to positively promote the sport at all levels to give more people the oportunity to discover the health effects of aerobic exercise and fullfilling goals.
