UCLA, under coach Jim Bush, wins the first of three consecutive national titles during the 50th NCAA Track and Field Championships hosted by Washington. Second place Southern California was just 11 points behind. Runners (competing in yards) who took home individual championships included Harrington Jackson, Larry Black, John Smith, Mark Winzenried, Marty Liquori (his 3rd one mile title), Sidney Sink, Steve Prefontaine in the 3 mile event, Garry Bjorklund, and Rod Milburn and Ralph Mann in the hurdle events.
