This video reviews the earliest examples of women’s sport up until the late 1960’s when women’s participation in the Olympic Games began to increase dramatically. The exploits of early female Olympians such as: Aileen Riggin, Kinue Hitomi, Mildred "Babe" Didrikson, Jean Shiley, Sonja Henie and Christl Cranz are highlighted. The post war Games of 1948 introduced female athletics superstars such as Fanny Blankers-Koen and Alice Coachman and the Games of the 1950’s and 60’s were the stage for the track and field exploits of Betty Cuthbert, Shirley Strickland, Colette Besson and Wilma Rudolph and Australia’s swimming superstar, Dawn Fraser.
