African-American athletes today are much-loved heroes in American sports, but this has not always been true. In the past, many black athletes were rejected and struggled to meet their fellow competitors on a level playing field. Captured here is the telling of over 100 years of history as men and women challenge and break through the barriers based on race. Many of the social, political, and economic aspects are discussed as well as some of the finest achievements in sports history. Hardly a sport goes uncovered as horse racing, bicycle racing, boxing, basketball, baseball, golf, track and field, tennis, and football are all examined by scholars, coaches, and athletes who discuss the infuence various movements had on the arena of sport in America. Some of the athletes who are featured include: Jack Johnson, Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, Jackie Robinson, Jim Brown, Bill Russell, Arthur Ashe, Julius Erving, and track stars Jesse Owens, John Woodruff, Wilma Rudolph, Wyomia Tyus, Tommie Smith and John Carlos. This documentary was produced by Leslie D. Farrell, Paul H. Hutchison, Kendall B. Reid and written by William C. Rhoden.
