Motion Picture Soundtracks

Sound is a very important component to any film production. Few things can set the mood, advance the action, and close a scene as well as an outstanding soundtrack that promotes the visual images. Below are a host of songs, some very popular and some that few people have heard beyond the movie theater. Notice the titles choices that clearly illustrate that running is the focus: Running, 100 Meters, 100 Mile Dash, Hurdles and Girdles, Munich Race, and The Final Race, just to name a few. The Big Chill

There are 14 tracks on the 1983 Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Plus Additional Classics From the Era. In 1984 a 2 disc Deluxe Edition was released as well as a 15th Anniversary remastered album that was released in 1998. Chariots of Fire

Polydor and Universal Music Catalogue released a newly remastered edition of the classic 1982 Original Soundtrack by Vangelis. The Chariots of Fire theme is one of the most recongnizable film themes of all time. This soundtrack won an Oscar in 1981 for best film score and the 2006 release ilustrates the lasting quality of this produciton. In addition, you can still find the 1995 editions of the Original Soundtrack as well as a 2000 Compilation that includes a variety of of 16 tracks (not performed by Vangelis).Click to Enlarge

Forrest Gump

The soundtrack is a double album released in 2001 that features a total of 32 classic pop tunes. This is an outstanding anthology of three decades of American music from well known artists that make up the base of many music collections. The only other music soundtrack collection that comes close to this is American Graffiti (1973), but there is no running in that one. If you are wanting to purchase songs individually, see if the track is included in the 21 songs from the Original Soundtrack released by Sony in 1994.

The Incredibles

Released in 2004 by Disney, each of these songs can be previewed or purchased in MP3 format. In his very first score for a feature film, the composer for this score is Michael Giacchino. He is also well known as the composer for the hit TV shows "Alias" and "Lost". When you listen to these tracks you will hear a James Bond influence as the action soars.

Juno

This album was released by Rhino Records in January 2008, while the film was still playing in the theater. If you listen to the last track, "Anyone Else But You" performed by Michael Cera and Ellen Page, you will hear the foot strikes of the Dancing Elk track team as the film comes to a close. This song by The Moldy Peaches inspired the rest of the selections on this soundtrack and in the insert notes by director Jason Reitman you will learn more about how they filmed this closing scene. Thumbsucker

Released by Hollywood Records in 2005, this soundtrack was written and recorded primarily by Tim DeLaughter. Three tracks were performed by late singer-songwriter Elliott Smith, including the original "Let’s Get Lost" and covers of Big Star’s "Thirteen" and Cat Stevens’ "Trouble," the latter believed to be among the last tracks he ever put to tape.
