Notes
Results The above listings reflect what has been determined to be the best marks set at Lincoln High School based on all time
Oregon State Meet and PIL District performances. In addition, marks captured since the 2005 season appear accurate.
In order to make these records complete, an extensive review of additional sources, such as past newspaper listings and
school year book reviews would be helpful. Corrections and additions are always welcome.
Missing Records The OSAA does not have meet results of Oregon State competitions held in the following years:
1932, 1934-1947, 1949-1950, and 1952. Results shown were obtained from The Oregonian Newspaper.
Relays Relay teams qualify one time for each season in each of the two events: 4x100 & 4x400. Although 4x200, 4x800,
4x1600, Sprint Medley and Distance Medley are occasionally held, they are infrequent and not currently included in
Oregon State Meet competition so are therefore not included in these listings.
Javelin Two Records are recorded to reflect the differences between the original Javelin implement and the "New" Javelin that
was introduced in Oregon in 2000. With the center of gravity being moved 4 centimeters forward it created an increased
downward pitching moment resulting in less distance, more safety, and easier measurement.
Abbreviations a= FAT, or Fully Automatic Timing. This standard has been used in the state meet since 1975 and at PIL district meets.
c= Converted time. If a hand time, rounded up to the neareth tenth and then adding .24 seconds.
h= Hand timed, used to reflect the actual official time prior to 1975.
w= Wind aided, likely only recorded during state competitions.
Conversions Races conducted in yards prior to 1978 were converted using the Hoffman Track Calculator.
Distance races of Mile and 2 Miles were converted to 1500 meters and 3000 meters results.
Corrections Changes, additions, and corrections are all welcomed to make these listings the best possible.

Student Athlete Biographies
Melanie Batiste
Melanie was Lincoln’s first outstanding female sprinter and competed in the state track meet in 1975 and 1976.
She won two state titles: the 220-yard dash in a time of 25.37a seconds and as the anchor on the 4x100 team
that posted a 48.00 mark, a school record at the time. In addition, she placed second in four other events over
that two year period. Melanie went on to compete at the University of Oregon and while there she recorded
personal bests of 11.77 seconds for the 100-meters in 1979, and 23.66 seconds for the 200 meters in 1980.
At the national AIAW Meet she helped Oregon’s mile relay teams to 2nd place in 1979, 1st place in 1980, and
3rd place in 1981. In 1980 Melanie advanced to the semi-finals in the 200 meter US Olympic Trials. In 1994,
U of O inducted her into their Hall of Fame for her outstanding achievements.

Art Boileau
When Art left Lincoln in 1975 he had the school record in the 3000 meters and had placed 6th in state that year.
The PIL inducted him into their Hall of Fame as a three sport athlete having competed in cross country, wrestling,
and Track. He continued to mature as a runner and blossomed in the marathon event. Art was born in Edmonton,
Alberta and represented Canada in two consecutive Summer Olympic Games, 1984 Los Angeles (44th in 2:22:43)
and 1988 Souel (28th in 2:18:20). Art won the Los Angeles Marathon twice (1987 and 1989) and earned a 2nd
place finish behind Rob de Castella in the 1986 Boston Marathon with his fastest time to date, 2:11:15. Art now
enjoys cycling and triathlons and is a coach of the West Vancouver Track & Field Club.

Marie Davis
Marie competed for Lincoln from 1992 to 1995, setting many records along the way. Each of her four years she
ran both the 1500 and 3000 meter event at the state track meet, never finishing less than third. In four out of the
eight races she took the top spot on the podium and with her 9:53.59 3000 meter time she is still in the top 10
all-time for Oregon. In 2006 the PIL inducted her into their Hall of Fame, and the University of Oregon also
followed recognizing her All-American status and PAC-10 3000 meter title there. The Lincoln Alumni wrote a nice
article on Marie in their 2006 newsletter. Marie currently teaches elementary school and continues to train, race,
and be involved in athletics.

Ronald East
Ron was a three sport athlete at Lincoln and earned 4th place honors at the state meet in 1961 where his javelin
mark was top 20 for US high school competition with a throw of 189' 9 in the finals. He later attended Montana
State University where he was the 1966 Big Ten Javelin Champion. He spent 10 years as a lineman in the NFL
for several teams and played in the 1971 Super Bowl (his son was born during that game) for the Dallas Cowboys.
Ron is in the PIL Hall of Fame and more about his football career can be read at wikipedia.org.

Jim Grelle
Jim defended his state 880 yard run title in a State Meet Record time of 1:58.0 while wearing a Lincoln singlet in
1955. The previous record time of 1:59.9 was set in 1950 by Al Martin of Cottage Grove. As a top miler in the
United States, in 1962 he became the 4th US miler to break 4 minutes, see complete US Sub-4 list. Jim continued
racing under Bill Bowerman at the University of Oregon after finishing high school. He received numerous honors
including NCAA champion, AAU champion, Pan-American Games, and placed 8th in the 1500 meters during the
1960 Rome Olympic Games where Peter Elliot set a new world record. For a nice summary of his running visit
OregonStars.com. Grelle has been inducted into the following Halls of Fame: PIL, U of O, and the Oregon State
Sports Hall of Fame (only Lincoln track athlete to ever obtain this honor).

Personal Bests: 800 – 1:48.4 (1958); 1500 – 3:38.9 (1964); Mile – 3:55.4 (1965); 2 miles – 8:25.2 (1966);
                        3 miles – 13:43.4 (1967); 5K – 14:10.8 (1966).

Connor Kavanaugh
Connor competed in Track & Field his junior and senior years at Lincoln. He was well known as a passing and
rushing quarterback prior to racing the oval around the football field. In his first year of track he lowered his 300
hurdle times from 45 to 42.34 seconds. Returning his senior year, he ran 7 of his 10 races in less than 41 seconds,
with his best race of 40.03 earning him a second place finish at PIL District meet and a trip state. Remarkably, he
once ran down a fellow competitor by taking 13 steps to the last hurdle after 15-stepping the earlier barriers in the
race. Connor has continued his education with the Portland State Vikings and as a left-handed quarterback has
worked his way to the starting position.

Christy Lacey-Krietz
Lincoln’s 800 meter record holder in 2:11.57 was a point winner each of her four years in her signature event. She
was on the 1995 State Championship Team and won the 800 in her final year, 1996. Christy chose Stanford
University to continue her running. Christy has continued successful racing after college and in 2002 she returned to
Lincoln High School as a volunteer cross-country coach.

Robin Marks
Robin holds the top spot on the all-time Lincoln performance list in three events: 200 meters (25.40), Long Jump
(19' 0), and as a member of the 4x400 Relay team that went 3:54.23, all winning positions at state. She also placed
second her senior year in the 100 High Hurdles by running 14.30. These points helped contribute to Lincoln’s first
ever team title for the Cardinal girls. She also competed in Basketball and was the 1980 Rose Festival Queen her
senior year. Robin continued her success at the University of Arizona where during that period she was ranked in
the All-Time Top-10 U.S. women in the 400 Hurdles by Track & Field News for 3 years. Her Hall of Fame
honors include the PIL Hall of Fame (inducted 1995) and the University of Arizona Hall of Fame (inducted 2002).

Bianca Mathabane
This seven-time State Champion won six individual titles and one Relay award while representing Lincoln. She
competed for Benson during her freshman year (2004), and is the only Oregon state track athlete to have been on
the only two teams who have swept both the Boys and Girls titles in the same year. Bianca has the Oregon state all
time best of 13.57a set during her junior year at the PIL district meet on her home track. She also maintains Oregon
state class records for all four years in the 100 High Hurdles (14.17a senior, 14.58a sophomore, 14.92a freshman)
and freshman (44.85a) and sophomore (44.25) state class records in the 300 Low Hurdles. Bianca currently
competes for Princeton University.

Michael McGrath
Mike was the only male state meet competitor to score points from 2001 to 2003 for the Cardinals. As a sophomore
he made the final in the 400. His junior year he moved up to both the 800 and 1500 meter distance where he placed
second in 3:52.38. During his senior year he stuck to his specialty, the 800 where he won his first state title. Earlier in
the season he ran 1:48.56 at the Centennial Invitational to lead the nation in 2003. You may read an interview from
Men’s Racing that describes this period. Mike ran 4:05.28 in the mile which places him 37th all time HS Miler List.
For college he attended the University of Oregon where they maintain a record of his outstanding performances.

Bianca McNair
Born in Portland, Bianca was a four-time varsity letterwinner at Lincoln High School. She earned runner-up status in
the 400 meters (55.07) and third in the 200 meters (25.02) at the 2002 Oregon state high school meet. Bianca was
voted the team’s Most Valuable Player in 2001 and 2002 and had qualified on the relay team all four years she
participated. She also was a two-year letter winner in volleyball and continued her running as a leading sprinter and
relay member for the San Diego State Aztecs.

Bill Mullen
Bill was the first Lincoln track athlete to score points at an Oregon State Meet held in Corvallis in 1927 after
qualifying at the Franklin track that notably started the 100 meter dash on the curve. He did it in a big way by
winning the half mile run. Here is how the May 26th, 1927 Oregonian newspaper reported on the event:

"When Bill Mullen of Lincoln sprinted to the tape in the half mile at Corvallis in 2:05 he showed himself to
be the outstanding half-miler in the league. Mullen is almost certain to repeat, for the plucky little railsplitter
has shown a consistent and steady improvement from meet to meet."

Aegir Olsen
Aegir cleared 10 feet in his first track meet his junior year and then quickly improved to 12’ 6” under the guidance
of pole vault coaches Tinker Hatfield and Piotrek Buciarski. Returning for his second track season this vaulter quickly
took to the pole during indoor competition and continued improving during the outdoor season. He placed first in
each of his nine outings his senior year, including prestigious invitational appearances at Pasco, Centennial, and Jesuit,
prior to winning the PIL District Championship. Aegir cleared 14’ 6” at two separate meets during high school
competition and placed 5th in the Oregon State meet with a 14’ 3” effort. He will continue his vaulting at the
University of Washington in Seattle.

Tiarra Pittman
Tiarra’s 43.51 breakout performance 300 Low Hurdle time at the Oregon State Championship Meet earned her the
second fastest time ever raced in the state and her first individual state title. She stood upon the Oregon State track
podium on ten occasions, having earned honors in the 100, 200, 300 Hurdles, 4 x 100 Relay and 4 x 400 Relay
events. Tiarra held Oregon State Team trophies three years in a row as she contributed in the 2007 State Team Title,
2008 4th Place finish, and 2009 3rd Place Team award. Tiarra will continue her sprinting and hurdling within the
PAC-10 for the Golden Bears at the University of California, Berkeley.

Jordan Polk
Jordan scored points in the state meet in four events in both his junior and senior year at Lincoln. Improving upon his
runner-up status in the 100 meters, Jordan clocked 10.63 in his senior year to take that individual title and help his
team to a second place trophy in 2008. The year prior his sprinting, long jump, and short relay points contributed to
Lincoln’s first ever team title for the Boys’ squad. Currently Jordan is best known athletically for his wide receiver
and kick return duties on the University of Washington football team, although he has competed in the Husky track
uniform in some indoor meets in Dempsy arena in Seattle.
